Just 5 windless days, in a 100% wind and solar UK, would cost £1,164 billion in Battery Backup - 83X more than CCGTs.

The UK uses 340 TWh of electricity each year.
Can this ever be supplied by 100% wind and solar power with battery backup?

Because we generally deplore landscape scenic desecration, a 'reasonable' scenario might be:
30% onshore wind-43,120 MW installed capacity (currently - 12,851 MW)
60% offshore wind - 60,800 MW installed capacity (currently - 7,899 MW)
10% solar - 37,800 MW installed capacity (currently - 13,060 MW)

Taking a random 5 days at the end of February 2019, when the wind 'disappeared' but was compensated for by some decent levels of solar power, this is the metered data:

12,851 MW of onshore wind generated 974 MW; 43,120 MW would generate 3,268 MW
7,899 MW of offshore wind generated 864 MW; 60,800 MW would generate 6,650 MW
13,060 MW of solar generated 1425 MW; 37,800 MW would generate 4,124 MW

Shortfall from 100% wind and solar = 33,197 - 3,268 - 6,650 - 4,124 = 19,155 MW

Over the 120 hour period, battery backup required = 19,155 x 120 = 2,298,600 MWh

"...[T]he Australian government announced that it would invest $25m (£13.5m) .... to fund large-scale grid-connected batteries, together providing....some 80MWh of energy storage...": Equivalent to £168,750/MWh.

Cost of batteries to generate 2,298,600 MWh @ £168,750/MWh = £388 billion.

CCGT backup to supply 2,298,600 MWh would be £14 billion

But batteries only last 10 years. To generate for the 30 year lifespan of CCGTs would cost: £1,164 billion.

Battery backup costs 83X more than CCGT backup!

RENEWABLES TECHNOLOGIES WILL FOREVER REQUIRE FOSSIL-FUELLED CCGT BACKUP!

'Lesta's-Investas' Could Fund Lowest-Ever-Cost Nuclear Power Plant To Supply All Of Leicester's 24/7, Low-Carbon Electricity For 60 Years.

SMRs can be sited near centres of population:

"...the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission just agreed that any emergencies that could possibly occur at a small modular nuclear power plant probably won’t even get past the fence.........No need to come up with huge evacuation plans for nearby cities or anyone living near the plant, like we did for older plants. You can just stand there at the fence and watch what’s going on..."

Nuclear power at this overnight cost might well be CITIZEN FUNDED!

Nationally, 25% of people live in poverty in the UK.

Leicester has about 170,000 households, so it may well be that some 60% - 100,000 households – could well afford to put up £1,000 per year for 5 years???

That would feed into the coffers of an operator willing to fund a 300 MW nuclear power plant [npp] £100,000,000 per year. Probably an ideal cash-flow-rate, with about £40,000,000 of ‘float’ at the end of it.

If you’re a ‘Lesta-Investa’ you’d get your electricity at just about half the price/kWh of what’s normally paid!

And your heating and hot water too.
Twice the'Bang for your Bucks'!

FOR SIXTY YEARS!

Japan's Savings in Healthcare Costs through the use of Nuclear Power Tops US$1 Trillion !!!!!

“…TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan’s government on Friday nearly doubled its projections for costs related to the Fukushima nuclear disaster to 21.5 trillion yen ($188 billion), increasing pressure on Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) to step up reform and improve its performance…”
[US$191 billion Jan 2018]
------------------------------//------------------------------
There is no doubt Japan relied heavily of coal for its energy needs in the early decades of the 20th century. Whether for electricity generation, heat or gas, coal would certainly have had significant healthcare costs associated with pollution:  “…Extraction in Japan during 1912 was 20,000,000 tonnes, in 1932 in 30,000,000 tonnes and grew in 1941 to 55,500,000 tonnes…”

--------------------//--------------------

Nuclear power generated 1980 – 2012 = 32 years x 220 = 7,040 TWh
Nuclear power generation commenced in 1966 and reached 80 TWh by 1980.
Nuclear power generated 1966 – 1980 = 14 years x (80 ÷ 2) = 560 TWh
Nuclear power generated to 2012 = 7,040 + 560 = 7,600 TWh
--------------------//--------------------
Healthcare Savings
“…For coal…… associated economic values of health impacts are [2012] $0.19–$0.45/kWh…”. Average = $0.32/kWh

Add 7.44% for 2018 value:   Average = $0.34/kWh = [2018]US$340 million/TWh
7,600 TWh x $340,000,000/TWh = $2,584 billion.

This represents the USA saving at a 2014 Healthcare Expenditure of $9,403 per capita.
--------------------//--------------------
But Japan’s 2014 Healthcare Expenditure is only 39.4% of the USA figure [$3,703].

------------------------------//------------------------------
Assuming the relationship stays constant for 2018:
$2,584 billion x 0.394 = [2018] US$1,018 billion.
------------------------------//------------------------------
Cost of Fukushima Accidents:
[2018] US$191 billion
Japan’s Nuclear Power Healthcare Savings:
[2018] US$1,018 billion
--------------------//--------------------
FINAL SCORE
ACCIDENTS 1     :     SAVINGS 5.3

COST OF OFFSHORE WIND NOSEDIVES BY 57%! IS IT PROFITABLE? PROFITS NOSEDIVE TO 0 [ZERO]

Beatrice, 2007: £2,600 million; 588 MW. That's equivalent to £4.42 million/MW of installed capacity.
CfD Rate:  £140.00/MWh

Moray East, 2017: £1,800 million; 950 MW. That's equivalent to £1.89 million/MW of installed capacity.
CfD Rate:  £57.50/MWh
---------------------------//---------------------------
---------------------------//---------------------------
Is £57.50/MWh a problem for Nuclear?
NO - BUT IT IS FOR OFFSHORE WIND!!!
--------------------//--------------------
To Energy Fund Managers:
Why even contemplate investing 64% more in 950 MW of the very latest Offshore Wind technology, when investing in a 220 MW SMR will 'generate' 14.5X more 'Earnings - Costs' ?????

To GENUINE Environmentalists:
Support investment in SMRs and get 2.6X more [24/7] low-carbon electricity, for every £ invested, than from the very latest Offshore Wind technology.

To Politicians:
Support investment in SMRs and have your cake and eat it. Get 2.6X more low-carbon electricity and 14.5X more [taxable] money circulating in the economy.

Pressurised Water Reactors [PWRs] operate at Capacity Factor of 90%. Over its 60 year design life, a R-R 220 MW SMR will deliver 104.1 million MWh of 24/7 electricity.

Earnings - £57.50/MWh at CfD rate [35 years] will be
£3,490.6 million.
Earnings - £42.00/MWh current rate [25 years] will be
£1,821.2 million.
Earnings over 60 year Design Life: £5,311.8 million.
--------------------//--------------------
Capital Cost: £1,100 million.

2008 - O & M: 1.37 cents/kWh. Then, Plus 13.69% US inflation to 2017 & $1.31 to £1.00 = £1,237.7 million.
The NEI describes what is included in those numbers.

Hinkley Point C, 3,200 MW Nuclear Power Plant [NPP] decommissioning/waste storage/waste handling cost: £7,300 million. Pro-rata cost for a 220 MW NPP:
(220 ÷ 3,200) x 7,300 = £501.9 million.

2008 - Fuel: 0.49 cents/kWh. Then, Plus 13.69% US inflation to 2017 & $1.31 to £1.00 = £442.7 million.

Total Costs [excluding Cost of Capital] = £3,282.3 million
--------------------//--------------------
Earnings - Costs = £2,031.2 million.

The UK's Nuclear Industry Is Petrified Of Taking On Its Main Competitor For Investment - Pathetic Offshore Wind !!!

It's taken me a fortnight to 'uncover' this:

All you Nuclear Supporters out there - SMRs are our best chance ever of getting the Nuclear Power Industry on the move again - In the UK and anywhere else in the World.

Please contact your Politicians, contact your local and the National Media, comment on reports and pieces in any and all of the media !!!

The Nuclear Industry is not getting these 'GLAD TIDINGS' into the face of the general public - so it's up to US - THE PRO-NUCLEAR MINNOWS !!!
